Choose a predictable process

Good early candidates have clear inputs, repeated steps, and a recognizable result. Examples include routing an approval, sending a reminder, or creating a record in another system. A process that changes constantly may need to be clarified before it can be automated well.

Pay attention to exceptions

Ask what happens when information is missing, an application is unavailable, or an approval is rejected. Decide who receives the exception and how they resolve it. An automation that silently fails can cost more time than the manual process it replaced.

Keep ownership clear

Every workflow needs an owner, documentation, and a way to see whether it is working. Review it when applications, policies, or staff responsibilities change. Measure the result against the original problem so you know whether the improvement is worthwhile.
